Current organization structure for the International Triticeae Mapping Initiative (ITMI) as of June 2000The primary topic for coordination was RFLP mapping organized around theTriticeae homoeologous chromosome groups. In addition, several diploid genomes, genetics of abiotic stress resistance, and Triticeae informatics (database and RFLP probe repository) were coordination topics. An email roster of some 130 scientists who wished to be identified as ITMI affiliate scientists was maintained by the management office. The primary activity of ITMI since 1989 has been the holding of annual workshops at which coordinators presented summaries of research progress in their areas and invited and volunteer oral and poster presentations on current research on species of Triticeae were made. At the inception (November 1992) of the annual international Plant Genome Conference (now the International Plant and Animal Genome Conference), ITMI participated with a poster; at Plant Genome II in January 1994, the Fourth ITMI Public Workshop was held; and since then ITMI has organized a worksession at the meeting in January of each year at which specific topics relevant to mapping and genomics have been explored with invited speakers. As an example of the international coordination role ITMI has played, a proposal for an international public repository for ESTs from Triticeae species arose from the Eighth Public Workshop in 1998. The International Triticeae EST Cooperative (ITEC) was subsequently organized under the auspices of ITMI. As of July 1, 2000, more than 20,000 ESTs will be available from a public database. The University of California Genetic Resources Conservation Program (GRCP) served as the ITMI management office since the inception of ITMI in 1989. This office was supported for this activity by contributions from two international centers (CIMMYT and ICARDA), a plant breeding company active in the early 1990s (Sogetal, Inc.), and a French consortium for wheat genetics and improvement (GIS GENOBLE) and by a five-year grant from the DOE/NSF/USDA Joint Program on Collaborative Research in Plant Biology.
