The expedition to Guadalupe and Cedros Islands
was realized after 14 months of intense planning, effective international
collaboration, financial and inkind support from participants
and institutional sponsors, and generous assistance from many
other individuals and organizations. The principal investigators for this activity
are grateful for the many contributions towards the success of
this activity, and express thanks to the following organizations
and individuals.
We thank the University of Californias UC MEXUS program;
the Australian Department of Industry, Science, and Technology;
and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United
Nations for financial support. Participants who provided financial
support for the expedition are David Bates, Richard
Hawley, Laurie Lippitt, and Nicole Nedeff.
Some financial assistance was also provided from research funds
of Dr. Scott Stephens (University of California, Berkeley)
and Dr. Ernesto Franco (Centro de Investigación
Científica y de Educación Superior de Ensenada,
Baja California). Carl Jackovich contributed his professional
tree-climbing skills to the expedition.
We are grateful for the very generous, spirited, and skillful
contributions of all the participants, those mentioned previously
and Dr. Javier López Upton, Celerino Montes,
Tadashi Moody, and Ana Ma. Padilla Villavicencio.
All 14 participants
were involved in cone collections, mapping, tree descriptions,
coring, and other related activities.
We appreciate the gracious reception on Guadalupe Island provided
by Admiral Manuel Calderón Lanz of the Mexican
navy and the assistance of the following individuals in transporting
bags of cones on foot over difficult terrain on Guadalupe Island:
Teniente de Corbeta Gabriél Soto Machado
Teniente de Corbeta Javiér Guillén Herrera
Maestre Ernesto Preciado Mercado
Marine Manuel Alberto Euan Vidrio

We are grateful for the assistance of Francisco Javiér
Maytorena and Mario Urias who contributed their time
and vehicles on Guadalupe Island towards transporting participants,
equipment, and bags of pine cones between the camp site and the
navy station, some twenty miles apart.
We appreciate the support and permission of the Mexican Ministry
of the Interior (Dirección General de Gobierno, Secretaría
de Gobernación) and the National Institute of Ecology
(Dirección General de Vida Silvestre, Instituto Nacional
de Ecología) to land on Guadalupe and Cedros Islands and
make collections of cones and stem cores.
We thank the Mexican consular offices in San Franciso, CA
USA and in Canberra, Australia, for assistance in obtaining the
appropriate research visas for expedition participants. We are
also grateful for the helpful recommendations provided by Patricia
Beller of the San Diego Natural History Museum and the support
and insight offered by Dr. Exequiel Ezcurra, President
of the National Institute of Ecology, Mexico.
We thank the owner-operators of Searcher Natural History Tours, Art Taylor
